Is it worth fixing the gearbox on my old BMW 320i, or should I just sell it?
#1
I have been going round and round about this for days, so I thought I would ask here. My 2012 BMW 320i has around 165,000 kilometers on it, and I have had it since new, so I am honestly a bit attached. Last month it started shifting really late when I accelerate, and now and then it feels like the engine is revving but the car is not moving as fast as it should. Two days ago it also made a whining sound when I was driving slowly in traffic. I took it to my usual mechanic and he said the gearbox may need work, but he does not do that kind of job himself. He told me to find a reliable BMW gearbox service in Industrial Area 10 because the workshops there deal with gearboxes all day and have the right machines. That was helpful, but he did not say how much it could cost, and that is what is keeping me awake. I also read a page about BMW gearbox repair, just to get some idea of what the problem could be, and it said slow shifting and whining can come from worn parts inside, old fluid, or a problem with the control module. The thing is, the car is old now. If the repair costs close to what the car is worth, does it make sense to spend that money? On the other hand, selling a car with a gearbox problem will give me almost nothing, and buying another car means a new set of worries. So my questions are these. How do you decide when a repair is worth it and when it is time to let the car go? Is a gearbox overhaul usually cheaper than a replacement, and how long does a repair like that last? Do workshops give any warranty on the work, and for how long? Also, if I decide to sell it as it is, should I tell the buyer about the problem or will a garage check find it anyway? I mostly use the car for the daily drive to work and for family trips on weekends, so I need it to be dependable. If any of you were in the same spot with an older BMW, please share what you did and if you regret it. I would really like to hear both sides before I decide. Thanks.
